Born at Blackburn, Lancashire on the 3 August 1870, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Hogg. Enlisted into the King's Own Scottish Borderers on the 5 January 1890. Served in India and was awarded the IGS with bars Relief of Chitral 1895, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 and Tirah 1897-98. Also served in South Africa from 1899 - 1902 and was awarded the Queen's and King's South Africa Medals.

Wounded on the 25 September 1915 at Loos.
