Born at Higham, Lancashire and enlisted at Burnley, Lancashire.
Lived at Hapton prior to enlisting circa 1906. His family were living at 6, Bright Street, Padiham on the outbreak of war. His wife and four children later moved to 8, John Street, Cheapside, Burnley circa 1917. Shown in Burnley Express when reporting his death in action as J. W. Hurst.
Hirst has no known grave. Commemorated on the Ferte Sous Jouarre Memorial, France.
