11579 Private E. Potter, DCM.
6th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the London Gazette of 14 November 1916. Potter was a native of Nelson, Lancashire.
The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads: -"For conspicuous gallantry in action. He rescued the wounded from the enemy under very heavy fire, displaying great gallantry and coolness throughout."
The Burnley Express of 12 August 1916 reported: -
D.C.M.FOR NELSON SOLDIER.
As announced in Wednesday's issue, Private E. Potter, 6th East Lancashire Regiment, 42, John Street, Nelson, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. The first intimation of the distinction was received by his parents a few weeks ago, Private R.S. Lord of Nelson, writing to state that Mick Potter, of Nelson, had won the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bringing in a wounded officer and four men. Inquiries since made by Potters relatives confirm the news of this gallant action, which was performed on May 8th, 1915. Before joining the army Private Potter was employed as a Carter by Wesley Clegg. He is 20 years of age.
